Kiribati: Drought - Mar 1999
*The Pacific region is currently experiencing the weather phenomenon La Niña, which is projected to continue into February - April 2011. La Niña typically affects the distribution of rain and tropical cyclones across the region.
Christian Aid Communications Officer, Sophia Mwangi, has recently returned from Ethiopia. She reports on Christian Aid's current work with communities in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Kenya, who have all been hit by drought.
The World Health Organisation will provide immediate assistance to Kiribati as part of a relief effort for the country's ongoing drought.
The WHO office in the capital, Tarawa, says it will provide supplies and equipment worth about 28-thousand dollars for monitoring water quality.
