Disaster description

Mexico reported 12 deaths on 11 January 2010 due to freezing temperatures. The National Meteorological Service said temperatures in the previous week, which had hit minus 11 degrees Celsius in some northern states, were the lowest since 1886. (Xinhua, 11 January 2010)

More than 9 thousand people were accommodated in shelters all around the country due to low temperatures since November 2009, particularly in the department of Sacatepéquez. (Gov of Guatemala, 2 February 2010)
