In 2006 and 2007, the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) provided operational, logistics and preparedness support to the region's National Societies in response to 33 emergencies, in an effective and efficient manner according to the needs.

The European Commission has taken two decisions on the supply of humanitarian aid to combat the effects of the cold weather in Peru and the drought and forest fires in Paraguay. The two grants of EUR 1.5 million each will provide assistance for around 60 000 people in Peru and 40 000 in Paraguay, all among the most vulnerable. The funds are administered by the Commission's humanitarian aid office (ECHO), under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

Bitter snowstorms, torrential rainfalls and severe cold weather have taken the lives of 55 children, left over 6,000 people with pneumonia, damaged crops and killed livestock in since early June of 2007. The worst flooding in decades following an unusually intense rainy season in Colombia has claimed at least 57 lives, with 100 people missing and 443,000 left homeless, their crops and animals washed away.

The extremely low temperatures in the Andes over the last few weeks have affected hundreds of families in the Peruvian high plateau and have exposed many children to cold related diseases. SOS Children's Villages has taken emergency action to support those at most at risk.

According to the local press, over 50 children have died due to the unusually cold weather in various parts of Peru. The high plateau provinces of Puno, Apurimac, and Cuzco are among the most affected.

Con motivo de la intensa ola de frío que afecta a las comunidades altoandinas de la Rep=FAblica del Perú, con secuelas tales como el fallecimiento de 61 niños menores de 5 años y más de mil casos de neumonía, la Embajada peruana en Buenos Aires ha solicitado a nuestra Cancillería el envío de ayuda humanitaria a través de la Comisión Cascos Blancos. La ayuda, que se hará efectiva el 27 de julio, consistirá en el envío por via aérea de un cargamento de mil frazadas, de aproximadamente 2 toneladas, que será entregado por la Embajada argentina en Lima.

Lima, 25 de Julio de 2007. Con la finalidad de apoyar a las familias afectadas por las bajas temperaturas en diversas regiones del país, ESSALUD entregó un lote de ayuda al INDECI consistente en 4.5 toneladas.

Las donaciones recolectadas entre los asegurados, trabajadores y sindicatos de esa institución consiste en ropa, calzado, frazadas y alimentos no perecibles.

En el acto de entrega estuvo presente el Jefe del INDECI, General Luis Palomino Rodriguez y el Presidente Ejecutivo de ESSALUD, Ingeniero Fernando Barrios Ipenza.
