Disaster description
On 4 Dec 2014, a fire broke out in the Maldives Water and Sewerage (MWSC) Company Generator Unit in the capital Malé, causing severe damage to the unit and forcing MWSC – the sole provider of clean desalinated water in the capital – had to suspend all water supply. The Government declared a state of disaster and set up a task force to coordinate the distribution of safe drinking water. Governments of India, Sri Lanka, China and the United States have been requested to support the Maldives. (IFRC, 8 Dec 2014)
