Programme purpose: In Serbia and Montenegro the International Federation's support focused on development through long-term programmes to increase the capacity of the Red Cross to provide services to vulnerable populations, and to be prepared to respond to emergencies and disasters. Suite à l'explosion d'un dépôt de munitions de l'armée albanaise à Gërdec, qui a fait plus de 300 blessés, près de 25 morts et des centaines de déplacés, une équipe du SPF s'est rendue sur les lieux de la catastrophe, du 3 au 6 avril, afin d'évaluer les besoins et d'apporter une aide concrète aux familles sinistrées.

Lavdie Elezi and her two sons Olsi, 7, and Endri, 3, survived the explosion of the military depot in Gërdec village, 12 km from Albania's capital city Tirana, that left thousands of people homeless, traumatised and hurt on 15 March.

Elezi was in her home cooking when the explosion occurred. When she heard the first blast, she took Endri in her arms and went out to see what was happening. Before she could think twice, the force of the explosion wrestled Endri from her arms and catapulted Olsi and her flat on the floor.

This map presents a post-explosion Formosat-2 satellite image recorded 23 March 2008 over the affected 800m High Risk Zone surrounding the destroyed munitions depot. Buildings within this zone were estimated to be 240, including 16 buildings directly associated with the depot. Explosion craters have been identified as well as the primary easterly direction of the blast due to the mountains surrounding the depot on three sides.

- GOA indicates that the immediate emergency relief phase is over and the focus is now on the medium to long term needs.

- Initial GoA damage assessment indicates that the cost of reconstructing damaged houses and businesses only will be in the region of 15 million Euros.

- A medium-term solution in relation to the housing of the displaced population needs to be identified while the long-term reconstruction takes place.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), provided $50,000 to meet the immediate needs of Albanians affected by the accidental munitions explosions at a military facility near the capital city of Tirana.

On March 15 and 16, a series of explosions at an Albanian military ammunition storage facility in Gerdec, 10 miles southeast of Tirana, killed 21 people and injured 250 others.

- GoA damage assessment is underway and expected to be completed in the next few days.

- UXO clearance is ongoing by the Albanian Armed Forces.

- The Government of Albania have released funds to those who lost their homes of 50,000 LEK (USD 600) per person (up to 200,000 LEK per family (USD 2500)).

- At the request of the Government of Albania, a 7-member UNDAC team arrived in Tirana for a two week mission. The UNDAC team will support the Government to assess the overall situation and identify priority needs.

A series of massive explosions on 15 March in an ammunition storage site in Gerdec, 16 kilometres from the Albanian capital of Tirana, has devastated three neighbouring villages. Explosions continued until the following day, causing additional damage to another three communities. The country was shocked as Albanian television broadcast amateur footage of shrapnel and glass shards flying through the air, injuring people. Three days after the disaster the state authorities reported 17 people killed, nearly 300 injured and ten missing.
