Vanuatu: Cyclone Ivy - Feb 2004

Disaster description

Tropical Cyclone Ivy affected more than 54,000 people (or a quarter of the national population as of March 2004) in the islands including Erromango, Malekula, Ambae, Ambrym, Epi, Pamma, Shepards Group and Tanna. Two people were killed, one seriously injured, and seven suffered minor injuries. More than 95 % of water storage facilities, water sources and systems in the affected islands were damaged. Some outbreak of malaria was reported in Tanna. Approximately 11,000 houses were damaged and half of health centres sustained minor to substantial damages; 44 schools and training centres were damaged with a few completely destroyed in Ambryn, one primary school destroyed on Paama and one school in Malekula buried by a landslide.
