La région du Katanga, située au Sud-Est de la République Démocratique du Congo, accueille un nombre très important de personnes rapatriées ayant passé jusqu'à 10 ans dans des camps de réfugiés dans les pays voisins, la Zambie et la Tanzanie. Les tensions au Sud Sud Kivu poussent la majorité de ces personnes retournant en RDC à s'installer dans la province voisine du Katanga, plus au Sud, alors même qu'ils n'en sont pas originaires ; augmentant ainsi la pression sur les ressources locales.

The region of Katanga, located in the South-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is the host area for many repatriates that have spent more than 10 years living in refugee camps in the neighboring countries of Zambia and Tanzania. The tensions in South South Kivu force the majority of the persons going back to DRC to settle down in the neighboring province of Katanga, more South, even though they are not from this part of the country; thus, increasing the pressure on local resources.

Since 2004, ACTED has been working to prevent the regular pandemics of cholera and water-borne diseases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, thanks to the implementation of projects of access to clean water and to sanitation facilities for the local populations.

Indeed, limited access of the populations to clean water and precarious hygiene conditions lead to regular cholera pandemics and other water-borne diseases in DRC, notably in the Eastern part of the country and in the Katanga and Southern Kivu provinces where ACTED is active.
