GENEVA - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Fund have signed a US$10.5 million grant to address human rights barriers faced by vulnerable communities in Africa, and facilitate access to lifesaving health care. The grant is the first of its kind and will cover 10 countries including Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, the Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Irene Sinzi stood eagerly outside of her home in the village of Mufumbwe, in Zambia’s North-Western province, waiting to receive her insecticide-treated net. It was an important day for Irene and her one-year-old child, as the Government of Zambia is undertaking the mass distribution of nearly nine million nets, simultaneously distributing them to all provinces across the country.

“I’ve had malaria before and it was terrible,” said the 21-year old mother. “I’m so happy because this mosquito net will protect us from malaria.”

GENEVA - In partnership with Zambia, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria signed a US$156 million grant agreement that aims to ensure a secure supply of antiretroviral medicine to all those receiving HIV treatment. The new funding will also support work that gets 225,000 more people to start treatment over the next three years.

At present, 480,000 people in Zambia are enrolled on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment with Global Fund support.

VICTORIA FALLS, Zimbabwe – A regional initiative that aims to eliminate malaria in the Zambezi valley was launched today by Zambia and Zimbabwe, with support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Announced on World Malaria Day, the cross-border initiative will accelerate efforts to eliminate malaria in the region with focused intervention, supported by existing grants from the Global Fund. Zambia and Zimbabwe hosted a series of events today in Livingstone, Zambia and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, to launch the Trans-Zambezi Malaria Initiative.

GENEVA – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced new results on Thursday showing a substantial increase in the number of people being treated for HIV and in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of the virus.

The results show an increase of 900,000 in the number of people receiving antiretroviral therapy since the end of 2011, taking the total now getting treatment under programs supported by the Global Fund to 4.2 million.

NAIROBI, KENYA, 27, May 2010 - Government representatives from 20 African countries highly affected by HIV/AIDS gathered today in Nairobi to discuss ways to virtually eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015.

The three-day-consultation from 26 to 28 May is co-organized by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and UN agencies, including UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO. Participants are exploring how to expand and strengthen services for pregnant women and increase treatment for infected mothers and children.
