Background

Unprecedented heavy rains in the southern provinces of Zambia towards the end of December 2007 caused flash floods and water logging - destroying vast areas of crops and leaving many people homeless. Continuing heavy rains all through the early weeks of January 2008 have worsened the situation for people living on river banks and other low-lying areas.

The Caritas Confederation of Catholic aid agencies fears that the situation could deteriorate rapidly if the heavy rains persist.

The landlocked Southern African nation is facing a national food deficit of 85,000 metric tonnes of maize - the country's main food crop - which will affect more than 1.2 million people by March 2006.

Caritas Australia has made a quick response to the needs of those affected by food shortages in southern Africa, with a pledge of $40,000 in immediate aid.
Millions of people are being threatened by severe food shortages across southern Africa following two years of flooding and drought.

People in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe are all badly affected and many have resorted to eating seeds stored for next year's harvest. It is feared that this will plunge them into a cycle of food shortages, as the harvest for next year will be badly affected.
