Water: Are we all too wet behind the ears?

March 22 marked World Water Day; a day when we’re all supposed to take action to tackle the water crisis. But how many people even know there’s a crisis to be tackled? Certainly, a good few in the developing world will be aware that there’s something not quite right, since a full 1.8 billion of them still use a contaminated source of drinking water. This puts them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.

The Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), meeting in its 143rd Session on June 13, has approved 17 loans and grants totaling over US$234 million to boost socio-economic development in over 44 partner countries. The majority of the public sector funding will co-finance transportation, energy and water supply and sanitation projects.

September 5, 2003, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development has distributed over 43,000 metric tons of food aid to towns and villages in nine African countries: Eritrea, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe that are affected by the current food crisis sweeping much of Africa. Lusaka, Zambia - The OPEC Fund for International Development is continuing with its delivery and distribution of food aid items purchased to assist several African countries battling drought conditions and a food crisis. The Fund arrived in Zambia, August 24, on the first leg of a three-nation tour by a delegation led by H.E. Dr. Y. Seyyid Abdulai, Director-General.
