20 October 2017, Zambia - According to statistics, two-thirds of the labour force in Zambia is engaged in agriculture, 78 percent of whom are women farmers. Agriculture accounts for 20 percent of the country’s GDP, and the output feeds over half of its population of nearly 14 million people.

In recent years, extreme weather conditions such as severe dry spells and floods have hit hard on Zambia's rain-fed farmland, posing serious threats to the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers.

  • August marked three months since the first Maano transaction. In three months, the Maano app has helped smallholder farmers in 28 rural communities sell 120.65 metric tons of their produce, worth 377,000 kwachas.

  • As a result of supplementary funding from the Government of Zambia WFP will be able to scale Up the Home-Grown School Meals from the current 1, 060, 770 children to about 1,500,000 children by 2018. This will result in about 15 additional districts being included on the HGSM programme.

Over 3,360 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) fled into Zambia between 30 August and 3 October 2017. The refugees have been fleeing inter-ethnic conflicts as well as clashes between government forces and armed militias in HautKatanga province. Several of them have reported extreme brutality committed by all parties against civilians.

NAIROBI, Oct 12 2017 (IPS) - A growing number of African countries are increasingly becoming food insecure as delayed and insufficient rainfall, as well as crop damaging pests such as the ongoing outbreak of the fall armyworm, cause the most severe maize crisis in the last decade.

Experts have warned that as weather patterns become even more erratic and important crops such as maize are unable to resist the fall armyworm infestation, there will not be enough food on the table.
