EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The various conflicts which have plagued the Great Lakes Region, have resulted in large numbers of victims who have been displaced from or forced to remain in their looted and destroyed communities or who have reluctantly sought refuge in other countries of the region.

In 1997/98, Zambia's production of maize - the staple food crop - fell by 43 percent over the previous year. According to the report of an FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission that visited the country in April/May, "Of all the countries of southern Africa, Zambia appears to have suffered the most from El Niño-related weather anomalies." The northern part of the land-locked country was flooded by abnormally high and incessant rainfall during the growing season, while the southern part experienced near-drought conditions.

APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE


1. The UN Resident Coordinator in Lusaka reports that in common with other countries in eastern and southern Africa, Zambia has also been suffering severe floods in certain localities in the northern sections of the country. There are several communities where crops and homes were destroyed/damaged.

LUSAKA, Zambia (PANA) - Zambia Wednesday strongly denied media reports that Angola's opposition UNITA is operating military bases in the country.



Foreign Minister Kelly Walubita said Zambia was irrevocably committed peace in Angola and had assiduously worked for the full implementation of the 1994 Lusaka Protocol to end the civil war in that country.
