Together with the DRC Government authorities, in particular the National Commission for Refugees (CNR), UNHCR manages and provides humanitarian assistance and protection to refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons. Within the collaborative IDP cluster approach, support is delivered jointly with MONUC, WFP, UNICEF, OCHA, UNDP, UNFPA, WHO, and FAO, among other agencies and NGOs. UNHCR leads the Protection cluster and with UNDP co-leads the Reintegration and Community Recovery cluster.

The global food crisis of 2007-2008 was characterized by a sharp spike in the prices of most commodities, including staple grains. This analysis examines the degree to which changes in world food markets influence the price of staple foods in Sub-Saharan Africa. The analysis is based on more than 60 price series from 11 African countries. After examining price trends over 2007-2008, we use an error correction model to estimate the degree of price transmission.

HARARE/JOHANNESBURG, 30 December 2010 (IRIN) - The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) staffed jointly by officials from Zambia and Zimbabwe, says one of the two major dams on the river between the two countries will open its flood gates in early 2011, meaning that communities may have to be relocated.

Luanda - "Espírito Santo Angola" Bank (BESA) donated Thursday USD 150,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Angola.

Speaking on behalf of BESA, Leonor Machado who handed over the check, said that the gesture coincides with the 60th anniversary of UNHCR.

Rainfall Season started in most parts of the SADC Region

Analysis of satellite rainfall estimates suggests that the rainfall season has started in earnest over most parts of the SADC region, with most areas experiencing their onset of rains in November (green colours, Figure 1a). The season was delayed by nearly a month in a few areas including parts of eastern Zambia, eastern South Africa and D.R.C. (bright orange and red colours, Figure 1b), but in most areas the onset of rains was relatively timely.
