The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe is not yet under control. The outbreak has spread in the Southern African countries. WHO and partners continue to support efforts aimed at information sharing from affected border districts, strengthening surveillance, as well as for resource mobilization.

REGIONAL CONTEXT

Cases of cholera continue to be reported throughout the region. The most critical situation continues to be in Zimbabwe, with more than 20,000 cases recorded. Ongoing migration and trade appear to have led to cholera outbreaks in countries bordering Zimbabwe. In South Africa, indigenous transmission has also become a reality. Zambia, Mozambique and Angola are also suffering from unrelated outbreaks.

LUSAKA, Dec 17 (Reuters) - More floods will hit parts of Zambia, where some people are already surviving on wild fruits after excessive rains caused crop failure earlier this year, Vice President George Kunda said.

Lusaka: Zambia President Rupiah Banda said demonstrations are not an answer to the high prices of food the country is facing, the Zambia Daily Mail reported on Saturday. Banda said demonstrations could only plunge the country into chaos and disturb the peace the country has been enjoying for the past years. En décembre 2006, le 2ième sommet de la Conférence Internationale sur la Région des Grands Lacs (CIRGL) s'est tenu à Nairobi, avec 11 pays (Angola, Kenya, Ouganda, RCA, Congo, Tanzanie, Soudan, Zambie, Burundi, Rwanda et RDC). La conférence s'est achevée avec la signature d'un « Pacte de sécurité, de stabilité et de développement dans la région des Grands Lacs » comprenant la création d'un « Fonds spécial pour la reconstruction et le développement » et d'un secrétariat basé à Bujumbura.
