For Watchlist advocacy, 2017 was marked by a rigorous and sustained campaign targeting the new UN Secretary-General to put children above politics. This follows several years of politicization of the Secretary-General’s annual report on children and armed conflict and its annexed list of child rights violators, including Saudi Arabia’s threat in 2016 to pull all UN funding if the Saudi-led coalition was not removed from the annexes.

Furthermore, migrant health has been and continues to be an important part of the global health agenda.

Thousands of people are fleeing the anglophone regions by bus, fearing escalating violence ahead of the 7 October election. Local authorities are tightening border controls while secessionists try to block access to/from the region.
The anglophone crisis continues to raise protection concerns, as secessionists and armed forces increasingly target civilians, with 400 civilian fatalities recorded in the past year alone.

Children from the highest mortality countries are up to 60 times more likely to die in the first five years of life than those from the lowest mortality countries, report also says.
Africa still hosts the largest number of displaced people worldwide. In 2017, some 24.2 million people in Africa were forced to flee as the result of conflict, persecution, other human rights abuses and food insecurity. Few political solutions were in sight.
