In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued a report describing the global landscape in 2040. The authors predicted severe food shortages, devastating wildfires and the dying off of coral reefs en masse. The report warns that, by 2040, global temperatures are expected to rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, meaning that most people alive today will see the dramatic effects of climate change within their lifetime.

From emergency to resilience: Protecting children in crisis contexts

When disaster strikes—be it violent conflict, economic downturn, pandemic or a natural event—children are among the most vulnerable to negative effects. Children may fall victim to any number of threats, including psychosocial distress, family separation, interruption in education, physical and emotional abuse, trafficking and neglect. Through our work in protection, education, resilience and risk reduction, ACTED places the safety and well-being of children at the centre of our programming.

In October 2018, Alliance2015 partners Concern Worldwide and Welthunger Hilfe released the 13th annual Global Hunger Index (GHI). The report details the state of hunger and malnutrition in the world and offers recommendations for how to address the root causes of this global issue. Notably, in the 2018 edition, the GHI also links the issue of food security to trends in mass migration, suggesting that hunger, like displacement, is the result of political circumstances, not environmental or natural causes.

Although most have been displaced for several years or even decades, few have durable solutions prospects such as returning to their home, being integrated into their host communities or settle elsewhere.
