En 1947, un equipo de científicos que estudiaba la fiebre amarilla colocó a un mono rhesus en una jaula en el bosque de Zika, en Uganda.

El mono desarrolló fiebre y cuando los investigadores analizaron su sangre detectaron un patógeno que en 1952 llamaron "virus de Zika". Dos años después, en 1954, se detectó la primera infección en un humano en Nigeria.

More migrants are trying to reach the EU via Turkey and Greece than taking the perilous sea crossing from Libya, the EU's border management agency says.

So far this year around 46,000 migrants have used the eastern Mediterranean route, compared with 43,000 crossing between Libya and Italy, Frontex says.

A trial of a malaria vaccine that targets the most dangerous variety of parasite that causes the disease has shown some positive early results.

The vaccine, developed at Oxford University, was 67% effective in a study of 121 men in Kenya, it found. Encouraging results have now been recorded for two malaria vaccines, after 20 years of research.
