The number of unaccompanied and separated migrant children is constantly rising on the new Balkan route and they are highly exposed to dangers such as trafficking or exploitation. Terre des hommes’ (Tdh) Children and Youth in Migration Programme has been exploring the situation of children who are victims or at risk of trafficking in human beings along this migration corridor to find solutions to protect them.

A partnership to incubate, make and accelerate innovation to address humanitarian needs

Introductory note: the future of bottom-up humanitarian innovation is present

About six months ago ICRC and UNHCR triggered a growing flurry of activity and interest around the idea of a Global Humanitarian Lab. The energy was targeted at building momentum and buy in for two simple ideas:

When children see the toys and coloured chairs outside the Terre des hommes (Tdh) caravan on the Serbo-Croatian border, they run towards it. Hadi, a four-year-old boy from Syria, shows staff his jacket, which has a broken zip. A young psychologist gives him a new coat. Hadi has been travelling for 10 days with his family. His father asks how far away Germany is. After taking a few minutes to relax and play, the family sets off in better spirits.

In southern Sicily, nearly one boatcarrying exhausted migrants lands every day. Last year, approximately 28,000 migrants arrived in the port of Pozzallo. Many of them were children. Said was 14 years old when he landed in Lampedusa without even wanting to. Terre des hommes (Tdh) took him in and helped him find a place in society.

Over the years, advances in satellite imaging have provided increasingly advanced cartographic data through programs like Google Earth that allows users all over the world to view detailed maps of nearly every corner of the earth. For development practitioners, these advances in mapping, when coupled with raw data and images from the ground, have created compelling, interactive ways to display and convey data about their current projects.

Many children leave their homes in search of better living conditions. They move from rural zones to urban zones, either inside the same country or migrating into another. In West Africa, and more specifically in Benin-Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo and Guinea, Terre des hommes endeavours to better understand the movements of children in order to put into place measures adapted to their specific protection needs. While migration can be a source of opportunity and success, it can also lead to the exploitation of vulnerable children.

« Recherchons petites filles…

“Little girls needed…” this is how these disturbing job announcements begin that appeared yesterday and today in the Swiss press, on the Internet as well as in different public areas across the country. Such job announcements do not exist, however, the situations they describe are real. On June 12th, the World Day Against Child Labour, Terre des homes (Tdh) launched its national campaign to end forced labour.

07 Apr 2014 description

Dr. Jean-Pierre Papart, Health Advisor at Tdh, answers our questions on stunting.

1) Can you briefly explain the phenomenon of “stunting”?

It is a very common form of malnutrition associated with children being undersized (also known as growth retardation). The small size is not in itself a problem unless it is associated, as is often the case, with poor cognitive development.

2) What are the main causes?

For a considerable number of girls – 39,000 if today’s trends continue – marriage rhymes with hostage (Source: WHO). Entrapped by the pressure of customs and traditions, these young girls are forced into marriage. This is the case in many regions of the world such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia, where the majority of child marriages take place, and the words ‘marriage for love’ are rendered meaningless. This Valentine’s Day, Terre des hommes (Tdh) remembers the reality being faced in 2014 by thousands of young girls.
