Leonard Cheshire and the Department for International Development (DFID) will launch a data portal at the Global Disability Summit on 24 July.

Inconsistent or poor-quality data has long hampered the progress of development efforts to improve the lives of people with disabilities. TheLeonard Cheshire Disability Portal will in provide detailed information related to a range of specific disabilities.

Bridging the Gap

Over the course of this three-year project, research teams in four countries (Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia) set out to better understand the relationship between disability and development in each country across four domains (education, health, labour markets and social protection). These countries were chosen as they demonstrate a range of socioeconomic stages of development. All have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Girls with disabilities in developing countries are effectively unseen and unheard and are often not benefiting from international efforts to improve access to education in developing countries.

Globally, 263 million children between the ages of 6 and 17 are out of school, 61 million of which are of primary school age (6-11 years)*. More than half of the total figure live in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia.

Of the 25 million children who will never start school, 15 million are girls*.
