GENEVA (6 October 2015) – Ahead of a key high-level European Union meeting this week, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein called on EU Member States to ensure that all discussions of migration policy are grounded firmly on the need to protect the human rights of all migrants.

Speaking ahead of the 8 October meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, Zeid expressed concerns about the continued security-driven agenda that appears to dominate the EU’s response. He raised particular concerns about the nature of the ‘hotspot’ approach.

These migrants are on the move due to various and interrelated reasons. Many are fleeing from their countries of origin due to extremely difficult circumstances, including violations of their human rights.

Search and rescue at sea, disembarkation, and protection of the human rights of refugees and migrants now imperative to save lives in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea

We, the undersigned*, strongly urge the leaders of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, to protect migrants and refugees stranded on vessels in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, to facilitate safe disembarkation, and to give priority to saving lives, protecting rights, and respecting human dignity.

The conflict in Yemen has now taken at least 646 civilian lives, including 50 women and 131 children. In addition, more than 1,364 civilians have been injured. These are the figures from 26 March up to 3 May. There has also been severe destruction of civilian infrastructure, including houses, in many districts.
