The Regional Strategic Plan for Immunization (RSPI) for the African region was adopted, in 2014, by the 64th session of the WHO Regional Commiמּee for Africa with the goal of achieving universal immunization coverage and reducing mortality and morbidity from vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) within the WHO African Region by the end of 2020. The plan was developed in line with the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP), approved by the World Health Assembly in 2012, which aims to prevent millions of deaths by the end of the Decade of Vaccines in 2020.

Executive Summary

The second 2017 meeting of the Regional Immunization Technical Advisory Group (RITAG), the principal advisory group to the WHO Regional Offce for Africa took place at the Protea Balalaika Hotel Sandton, in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 5–7 December 2017. The meeting focused on progress towards regional immunization goals, maternal & neonatal tetanus elimination, polio eradication & end-game strategy, challenges facing middle-income countries, cholera control and immunization research in the African Region.

GENEVA (10 September 2018) – The World Health Organization and the World Bank Group today convened the first meeting of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board (GPMB), a new body set up to monitor the world’s readiness to respond to outbreaks and other health emergencies.

The GPMB is chaired by Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and former WHO Director-General and Mr Elhadj As Sy, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societes, and includes some of the most notable leaders in global health.
