13 December 2018, Bangkok – As disaster losses increase throughout Asia and the Pacific, countries in the region need to accelerate action to reduce disaster risks and achieve the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. This was a key message at the ISDR-Asia Partnership Forum, a two-day gathering of 100 delegates from 20 governments, intergovernmental organizations, stakeholder groups, the United Nations and international organizations, organized by UNISDR Asia Pacific Office.

Geneva, 4 December 2018 – The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) has launched a new mechanism for engaging with partners in implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The mechanism, which recognizes the need for a multi-sectoral approach to disaster risk reduction, was launched at a partners meeting held in UNISDR’s headquarters in Geneva.

ROME, 23 November, 2018 - The Rome Declaration was adopted today by representatives of 55 countries at the close of the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Declaration was read out by Italy’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Claudia Del Re, at the closing ceremony and spells out the challenges and opportunities facing the region as it seeks to reduce disaster risk and disaster losses.

The Africa-Arab Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction took place from 9-13 October in Tunis, Tunisia under the theme “Towards Disaster Risk Informed and Inclusive Sustainable Development.” The meeting consisted of the 7th Session of the Africa Regional Platform and the 6th High-level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and the 4th Arab Conference on DRR. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) in collaboration with the League of Arab States (LAS) and the African Union Commission (AUC) organized the meeting which was hosted by the government of Tunisia.

GENEVA, 6 November, 2018 - The German Government has announced strong support for the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the global plan to reduce disaster losses, including €5 million for implementation over the next three years.

Mr. Norbert Barthle, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), made the announcement during a meeting in Berlin last month with the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, Ms. Mami Mizutori.

New York, 5 November 2018 – Students attending a World Tsunami Awareness Day Event in New York have called for more educational programmes on disaster risk reduction from an early age.

Twenty students, aged 16 to 18 years, and their teachers from the United Nations International School and Keio Academy discussed ways to be better informed to prevent and deal with disasters at the event organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Government of Japan.

GENEVA, 2 November 2018 – The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) today called attention to the significant loss of life and economic losses associated with tsunamis, notably for countries bordering the Indian and Pacific Oceans, over the last twenty years.

A review of available data from tsunami events puts these losses at 251,770 deaths and US$280 billion out of recorded economic losses for earthquakes and tsunamis of US$661.5 billion (1998-2017).

This was the call from the Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Andreano Erwin at an event, "Strengthening the Role of National and Local Governments in Reducing Economic Losses and Building DRR Capacity."

PARIS, 17 October, 2018 - A meeting to raise tsunami awareness opened with one minute’s silence yesterday in memory of the 2,000 confirmed dead and 680 officially missing in the tsunami and earthquake which struck Indonesia on September 28.

The double disaster left almost 70,000 people homeless and 11,000 injured in the Indonesian cities of Palu and Donggala in Central Sulawesi.
