IPC Global Brief Series 2015 Since its inception, the IPC has focused primarily on the analysis and classification of food insecurity situations and related outcomes. Although nutrition elements are integrated within the IPC analysis, currently the IPC does not incorporate a full nutrition situation overview in terms of considering malnutrition caused by other factors than food insecurity.

The IPC Information Support System (ISS) is a new innovative web-based application that has been designed to facilitate global, regional and national stakeholders in creating, storing, and disseminating IPC analyses and information. OVERVIEW

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), developed in 2004 to guide response to the food security crisis in Somalia, has evolved to be applicable in different country contexts, focusing not only on acute food insecurity but also on chronic food insecurity and nutrition analysis. As of 2015, the IPC is regularly used in 26 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to help decision makers better address the food insecurity challenge.

IPC - 10 Years of Multi-partner Collaboration towards Better Food Security Decisions and Country Impact

This year IPC celebrates its 10th anniversary. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification was developed in 2004 by FSANU, the former FAO Food Security Analysis Unit in Somalia, to respond to decision makers’ strong call for a consensual, rigorous and comparable food security analysis which enabled effective response to the Somalia food crisis. As of today, the IPC is regularly used in 29 countries worldwide and demand for IPC is still growing.

Editorial Note

10 Years of IPC

This year, the IPC celebrates its 10th anniversary. Originally developed by FAO in Somalia in 2004, the IPC has been extensively applied in different countries and contexts.

In 2007, the IPC became a Multi- Agency Partnership, now led by 11 Partners under the results-based IPC Global Strategic Programme (2014- 2016) launched in February 2014.

After many years of use of the IPC approach to inform the need of interventions with short-term objectives to address crisis situations, the version 1.0 of the IPC Chronic Food Insecurity Classification, also abbreviated as IPC-Chronic Classification, has been developed to complement IPC Acute Food Insecurity Classification to provide invaluable information for decision makers that focus on medium and long term objectives.
