Aunque en gran parte de la región, el paludismo está en vías de eliminación, su concentración y aumento en cinco países, pone en riesgo ese objetivo. Desde 2015, los casos de malaria en las Américas crecieron un 71%, pero el 95% del total se concentraron en cinco países: Brasil, Ecuador, México, Nicaragua y Venezuela. La Organización Panamericana de la Salud ha hecho un llamado a librar al continente de la enfermedad.
