As the conflict in Syria entered its eighth year, neighbouring countries continue to show great generosity in shouldering the weight of the crisis in terms of hosting refugees. As of June 2018, over 5.6 million Syrian refugees were registered in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt. Nevertheless, host countries continue to contend with mounting demographic, economic, political, security and social pressures. DAMASCUS – This year, the European Commission Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) contributed US$22.8 million for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide life-saving food assistance for families across Syria.
As of 18 December 2017, the UNICEF 2017/18 winter response in Syria and Syrian refugee host countries reached over 630,000 children but remains 58% underfunded (out of US$72 million appeal) and 880,000 children remain in dire need for support.

BERLIN – Germany’s support for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) reached an all-time record in 2016 of €791.5 million.
Of this amount, the largest single contribution ever to a WFP operation – €570 million – went to Syria and neighbouring countries, helping to restore food assistance to nearly six million of the most vulnerable people in this region last year.
In addition, the German Government boosted WFP preparedness, resilience, nutrition and innovation programmes through increased multi-year investments.
