The number of foreigners arriving in Azerbaijan increased by more than 10 percent.

Head of Azerbaijan’s State Migration Service Vusal Huseynov made the remarks at an event dedicated to the results of the Service’s activities in the first half of this year.

He noted that in the first six months of this year, 827,352 foreigners and stateless persons arrived in Azerbaijan.

“This shows a 10 percent increase in the number of foreigners in the country,” Huseynov said, adding that this figure was 747,107 people in the same period last year.

Linking the UPR and the SDG processes

States have noted the potential mutual benefits of creating stronger links between human rights mechanisms, particularly the UPR, and the SDG process, with a view to achieving both greater and more effective implementation of human rights obligations and commitments on the ground and increased accountability for delivering on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. In so doing States are acknowledging that many SDG Targets and Indicators have a strong alignment with and foundation in their preexisting human rights obligations.

Executive summary

Flooding is a natural disaster that can damage large areas in the vicinity of rivers, and in the case of flash floods, also in the vicinity of smaller streams. The Global Risks Report 2017 (1) lists extreme weather events, of which flooding is the main risk in most countries, as the risk with the second highest potential impact and the highest likelihood of occurrence. It furthermore seems likely that climate change will aggravate flood impacts in many regions.

↗ International prices of wheat and maize rose in March for the third consecutive month and averaged more than 10 percent above their levels in December 2017. Prices were mainly supported by concerns over the impact of prolonged dryness in key-growing areas of the United States of America and Argentina, coupled with strong demand. International rice prices remained relatively stable.

TRENDS AND KEY FIGURES

In February, just under 3,900 refugees and migrants entered Europe via Italy, Greece and Spain, less than half the number that entered in January. With lower numbers of people crossing from North Africa to Italy by sea compared to last year, the route to Spain experienced the most movement of the three Mediterranean routes with over 1,500 arrivals, followed by the route to Greece with over 1,200 and less than 1,100 to Italy.

Humanitarian access has deteriorated in seven countries over the past six months, according to the Humanitarian Access Overview report released today by ACAPS.

Out of the 37 countries included in the report, nearly half of them (18) are currently facing high humanitarian access constraints. Moderate humanitarian access constraints are an issue in nine countries and ten present low humanitarian access constraints.
