In East Africa, DEC aid agencies are working around the clock to respond to the deepening crisis caused by ongoing conflict and drought. While lives are being saved, the number of those in need of humanitarian assistance is increasing due the severity of the crisis – from 22 million people across South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia three months ago when the DEC appeal launched to 23 million today.

The “unsung contribution” of personnel serving in the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has been praised by the mission head, David Shearer on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29.

Speaking at a commemorative ceremony at UN House in Juba on Monday, Mr Shearer, who is also the United Nations Special Representative of the SecretaryGeneral for South Sudan, paid tribute to the men and women of UNMISS. He underscored his expectations that peacekeepers must act in a way that is “robust, calm and appropriate.”
