A refugee from the Sudan who is responsible for caring for his wife and children, Abkar is blind but did not want to let his impairment stop him from earning a living in his new community.
INTRODUCTION & CONTEXT
Egypt remains a destination and transit country for refugees and asylumseekers, most of whom live in urban areas.
Currently, 227,077 refugees and asylum-seekers of 58 different nationalities are registered with UNHCR Egypt. More than half of them are from Syria.
9,711 people have registered with UNHCR Egypt since the beginning of 2018; 4,641 registered in March and April.
Egypt is a destination country along the central Mediterranean refugee route with people arriving from both the Middle East and east Africa. A growing population of concern is stranded in the most overcrowded and poorest neighbourhoods of its largest cities such as Cairo and Alexandria as a result of an upward trend of new arrivals and tightened control measures aimed at curbing irregular outflows towards Europe.
Of the more than 217 000 refugees registered by the UNHCR, 126 291 are from Syria and the remainder are from East Africa or Iraq.
Cairo – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, and the National Coordination Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Migration and Trafficking in Persons (NCCPIM&TIP) are organizing two trainings on Countering Trafficking in Persons through Media for journalists and media professionals. Some 19 participants from six media institutions attended the first training on 16–17 August. The second training is scheduled for the last week of September.

Egypt - The UN Migration Agency (IOM) in Egypt launched its revamped Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) Map (http://avrr.eg.iom.int/) on 4 July 2017 to provide policymakers, development partners, civil society, private sector, academia and the donor community with updated information on stranded Egyptian migrants who opted to return home voluntarily and non-Egyptian migrants wishing to voluntarily return to their home countries.
UNHCR’s complaint procedures allow refugees and asylum seekers to file a complaint if there has been misconduct by UNHCR staff, interpreters, guards or NGO partners. A complaint must be filed within 3 months of the incident.

Egypt - On 6 April, Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) and IOM launched a new Migration Data Analysis Unit.
The Migration Data Analysis Unit aims to fill in existing information gaps by conducting periodic assessments and producing key statistics on migration issues to support the development of evidence-based policy and enhance migration management in Egypt.

Egypt - IOM has launched a social media campaign, ‘A Day Without Migrants,’ in partnership with the Egyptian award-winning click-funding innovators Bassita, to highlight the real and positive impacts that migrants have on the communities that host them.
The campaign, launched yesterday (21/11), seeks to start dialogue about the impact of migration that is centered on evidence and facts rather than propaganda.
