To assist the greatest number of people with urgent needs and in human mobility situation, the Ecuadorian Red Cross, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), are providing humanitarian assistance in three locations of the country: two at the north border (Rumichaca and Sucumbios), and one at south (Huaquillas).

Este 27 y 28 de abril, Cuenca (Azuay) será la sede de la III Cumbre Mundial “Hambre Cero”, evento instituido por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación, que este año reúne a representantes de 35 países y a nueve expresidentes, con el objetivo de analizar mecanismos que permitan combatir los problemas de nutrición. En esta ocasión, el evento fue organizado por el Gobierno Nacional, con el apoyo de la Prefectura de Azuay, el Consorcio de Gobiernos Provinciales del Ecuador y la Organización de Regiones Unidas.

El Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina (CAF) otorgó un préstamo por US$100 millones a Ecuador para apoyar en las gestiones de atención a los damnificados por el terremoto en la reconstrucción y readecuación de la infraestructura urbana y vivienda. El monto será canalizado para atender a 7,900 familias (alrededor de 40,000 personas) con la instalación de nuevos asentamientos.

The Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) granted a US$100 million loan to support people affected by the earthquake with the reconstruction of houses and urban infrastructure. Some 7,900 families (around 40,000 people) will be receive new homes.

The Situation

On Thursday 30 September 2010, civil unrest broke out in the capital city of Quito, Ecuador due to demonstrations over a new law regarding rights and benefits for the state police forces. Hundreds of police took over police stations, regional police departments, the Customs Office and the Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito. Disturbances and looting were reported in the streets and markets in Quito and Guayaquil. The demonstrations also disrupted public transportation in some cities.

El Niño forecasters' predictions of severe floods in the north of Peru and droughts in the south and into Ecuador are already starting to prove correct. In Ecuador flooding attributed to El Niño has already taken hold in the coastal south of the country. So far floods are only just threatening the north of Peru and are expected in Bolivia later.
