Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 77,555 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 17 September, with 33,611 to Spain, the leading destination this year.

This compares with 131,884 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 298,663 through a similar point (13 September) in 2016.

Spain, with over 43 per cent of all irregular arrivals on the Mediterranean through this year, has outpaced

Greece and Italy throughout the summer.

Arrivals to Spain during the month’s first eight days are at least five times those to either Italy or Greece, until this year both much more popular destinations for irregular migrants than Spain traditionally has been. This year’s totals through the first week of August are compared with 117,988 at this time last year and 263,436 at this time in 2016

Arrivals to Spain lead all countries with 23,741, or just over 40 per cent of all Mediterranean irregular migrants, who this year have surpassed those coming on competing routes. Their migration volume has nearly tripled the number of those registered at this time last year, when some 8,677 had arrived through 31 July.

850 personnes sont mortes en tentant de traverser la mer Méditerranée en juin et juillet, confirme le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés (HCR).

Le HCR a annoncé vendredi que plus de 1.500 réfugiés et migrants ont perdu la vie en tentant de traverser la Méditerranée au cours des sept premiers mois de cette année.

Une sombre étape confirmée après la mort de plus de 850 personnes rien qu’en juin et en juillet, faisant de la traversée de la Méditerranée comme la voie maritime la plus meurtrière au monde.

More than 1,500 refugees and migrants have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean in the first seven months of this year. The bleak milestone was confirmed after more than 850 lives were lost in June and July alone, marking the Mediterranean crossing as the deadliest sea route in the world. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is particularly concerned as the rate of deaths is increasing, despite the total number of people arriving on European shores being significantly reduced compared to previous years.

Spain is currently the main arrival-by-sea country in the Mediterranean with 22,858 migrants arriving since the beginning of the year and 1,866 of them arriving since 25 July alone. This is approximately 16,345 more migrants than arrived in Spain in the same period in 2017.
