The El Niño phenomenon refers to an abnormal warning of sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, while the term La Niña refers to unusual cooling of the surface temperature in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, with warmer than usual temperatures in the western Pacific. The El Niño and La Niña phenomena have implications for climate in both hemispheres.
