Japan's Meteorological Agency says the El Nino weather phenomenon has warmed waters in the eastern Pacific to their highest level this century.
The agency said the average sea surface temperature in the area in November was more than three-and-half degrees Celsius above normal.
But it said the increase indicated that the El Nino event had now peaked, and sea surface temperatures were not expected to rise dramatically in the near future.

The Mine Ban Treaty is the international agreement that bans antipersonnel landmines. Sometimes referred to as the Ottawa Convention, its official title is: The 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer or Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.

The treaty is the most comprehensive international instrument for ridding the world of the scourge of antipersonnel mines. It deals with everything from mine use, production and trade, to victim assistance, mine clearance and stockpile destruction.

Countries in southern Africa are urging farmers to plant early and prepare for drought conditions that many experts are predicting the subregion may suffer as a result of El Niño. "The worst effects of this year's El Niño are expected to be felt over the next few months", according to a Special Report on the event's impact on crop production in the subregion released by FAO's Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS) in late November.
