A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Oaxaca, Mexico, a region still recovering from significant damages after a September 2017 earthquake that killed hundreds.

Flooding in Guatemala and Panama and heavy rainfall in Honduras caused significant damage to homes and crops.
National authorities have responded by delivering food and dry goods to those affected.

The humanitarian impact of the 2015-2016 El Niño remains deeply alarming, now affecting over 60 million people. Central America, East Africa (particularly Ethiopia), the Pacific and Southern Africa remain the most affected regions. The El Niño phenomenon is now in decline, but projections indicate the situation will worsen throughout at least the end of the year, with food insecurity caused primarily by drought not likely to peak before December. Therefore, the humanitarian impacts will last well into 2017 .

Background and purpose

The impact of the 2015‒2016 El Niño weather phenomenon has been one of the most intense and widespread in the past one hundred years. The agriculture, food security and nutritional status of 60 million people around the globe is affected by El Niño-related droughts, floods and extreme hot and cold weather. While the El Niño itself has passed its peak and is now declining, its impact is still growing. Harvests in several parts of the world have already failed and are forecast to fail in other areas.

Globally, millions of vulnerable households are at risk of increased hunger and poverty due to droughts and floods as a result of a climatic occurrence: El Niño. This phenomenon is not an individual weather event but a climate pattern which occurs every two to seven years and lasts 9-12 months. No two El Niño events are ever the same and it is thought that this particular occurrence could be the most powerful on record. The strongest El Niño in 1997/1998 killed some 21,000 people and caused damage to infrastructure worth US$ 36 billion.

The El Niño phenomenon is a disruption of the Pacific Ocean’s atmosphere system, characterised by unusually warm temperatures which severely change weather patterns. It can cause extreme phenomena such as massive floods, extreme droughts with catastrophic consequences around the globe.

Experts believe that this year El Niño will be stronger than ever, with an impact similar to the 1997-98 episode which caused a number of deadly disasters in Latin America, the Caribbean and across the world, affecting millions.
