East Asia and the Pacific is the most disaster-stricken region in the world.

1 In 2016, disasters affected more than 86 million people in the region, compared with 40 million people in 2015.

2 In February 2018, Papua New Guinea was struck by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake which caused devastating landslides and widespread destruction. Some 270,000 people, including 125,000 children, are in need of immediate lifesaving assistance.

Washington D.C., September 18, 2018 --- The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is putting new finance to work, improving education prospects for the world’s most disadvantaged children. Grant approvals by the GPE Board of Directors in the seven months since the successful Financing Conference in Senegal in February have reached almost US$300 million. At the conference, donors pledged US$2.3 billion for 2018 through 2020 and further commitments continue to be announced.

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold its thirty-ninth regular session from 10 to 28 September 2018 in the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

If those who have been left behind – the poorest of the poor – are to be reached, governments need to adopt new approaches that are people-centred and empower and equip local governments to take innovative action.

These were among the key takeaways from ASEAN-China-UNDP Symposium on Localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Realizing Poverty Eradication, held this week in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
