ABU DHABI, 18th June, 2018 (WAM) -- The UAE Cabinet, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has adopted a resolution granting nationals of countries facing war and natural disasters a one-year stay permit, in solidarity with the people of affected nations and to offer them a chance to improve their living conditions until they are ready to return to their home countries.
ROME – In a ceremony held today at the annual session of the Executive Board of the World Food Programme, the Italian Government handed over the chairmanship of the Group of Friends of UNHRD to the Spanish Government. Also promoted by the Government of Panama, the event was the opportunity to celebrate the 18th anniversary of UNHRD, which was first established in Brindisi, Italy in June 2000.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has called for a fundamental shift in the way drought is perceived and managed in the Near East and North Africa region. The agency said in a new report issued today that a more pro-active approach based on the principles of risk reduction is needed to build greater resilience to droughts.

ABU DHABI, 3rd June, 2018 (WAM) -- The value of relief and humanitarian programmes that were implemented due to the directives of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, through the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, from 1993 to 2003, reached AED1.8 billion, which benefited 21 countries, while its developmental projects, valued at AED595.7 million benefitted Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.

WaPOR: database dissemination portal and APIs
The FAO portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WaPOR) monitors and reports on agriculture water productivity over Africa and the Near East.
It provides open access to the water productivity database and its thousands of underlying map layers, it allows for direct data queries, time series analyses, area statistics and data download of key variables associated to water and land productivity assessments.

The meetings were held in the presence of Dr. Abdul Wahab Zayed, Secretary-General of the Khalifa International Date Palm Award.

Vaqif Sadiqov, Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations in Geneva, praised the UAE’s pioneering role in supporting international stability, which has made it among the first countries to provide humanitarian assistance for refugees, through its participation in the international efforts to face humanitarian crises around the world, including the internal refugee crisis in Azerbaijan.
SHARJAH, 10th April, 2018 (WAM) -- Sharjah Police and The Big Heart Foundation, TBHF, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to develop cooperation in humanitarian initiatives that help promote the UAE and Sharjah’s efforts in the field of relief work, both regionally and internationally.
ABU DHABI, 10th April, 2018 (WAM) -- Since the onset of the Rohingya crisis last year, UNHCR has sent 16 emergency flights loaded with relief items to Southern Bangladesh. "Twelve of these flights came out of Dubai, and the UAE paid for the transportation costs of eight of them, valued between $1.5 - 2 million," according to the head of the UN Refugee Agency in the UAE.
ABU DHABI, 9th April, 2018 (WAM) -- The UAE has been named the world's largest donor of development assistance in proportion to its gross national income for the fifth year running, according to the Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development.
The UAE exceeded the United Nations’ target of 0.7 percent official development assistance in proportion to its GNI ratio by donating AED19.32 billion, a growth of 18.1 percent over 2016, representing 1.31 percent of its GNI for official development assistance in 2017.
