2018 was a disastrous year for civilians caught in conflict.
In most conflict zones around the world, the majority of those killed were civilians. Those who survived suffered myriad physical, emotional, and economic hardships.

So far in 2018, a total of 32,494 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece by sea. The majority are from Afghanistan (26%), Syria (24%) and Iraq (18%). More than half of the population are women (23%) and children (37%), while 40% are men.
Arrivals in December 2018, at 2,927 increased in comparison to November, when 2,075 people arrived on the islands. Arrivals during 2018 are 9% higher than those in 2017.
Arrivals This week
323 people arrived on the Aegean islands, an increase from last week’s 283 arrivals but a decrease from last year’s 391 arrivals during the same period.
The average daily arrivals this week equalled 46, compared to 40 in the previous week.
Population on the Islands
Over 14,400 refugees and migrants reside on the Aegean islands. The majority of the population on the Aegean islands are from Afghanistan (36%), Iraq (16%) and Syria (11%).

Stronger, coherent and gender responsive policies needed to reintegrate those returning from violent extremism
There is an even wider chasm between on-the-ground realities and global policies, where the fate of women and children is concerned. Programming must help them earn livelihoods, which can prevent them from being pressured into joining or rejoining extremist groups.
In 2018, Action on Armed Violence recorded 32,102 deaths and injuries from the use of explosive weapons around the world, as reported in English language media. Civilians continued to bear the burden of this harm, accounting for 70% (or 22,335) of these casualties. Of those civilian casualties 43% (9,615) were killed, while 57% (12,720) were injured by explosive weapons. This compares to 16,289 civilians killed (51%) and 15,615 injured (49%) in 2017.
At the end of December 2018, 21 Humanitarian Response Plans (HRP) and the Syria Regional Response Plan (3RP) required US$24.93 billion to assist 97.9 million people in urgent need of humanitarian support. The requirements remained unchanged as of the end of November 2018. The plans are funded at $14.58 billion which amounts to 58.5 per cent of financial requirements for 2018. Notably, the percentage of total funding contributed through humanitarian response plans carried out by the UN with partners in 2018 is estimated at 62.9%.
The Red Cross Red Crescent across the Asia Pacific region and in the Middle East have been helping people prepare for and cope with damaging extreme seasonal-weather – ranging from extreme cold and snow to storms and flash floods.
Most recently the ICRC in Lebanon yesterday tweeted that Storm Norma had left almost 600 Syrian refugee families in Aarsal, in the north-east of the country, one of the worst affected areas, without bread or fuel for heating.

Launched by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the 1 Billion Miles to Safety raises awareness of the long, precarious journeys that many refugees take and calls on the public to amp up support.
