It is an honour to be called to this mandate, to assist States to uphold the human rights of their people, in this year in which we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

SITUATION. Une reproduction a petite echelle a eu lieu dans le centre de I'Algerie, cependant que des ailes Oars etaient presents dans le sud-est de la Mauritanie et rest du Tchad.
PREVISIONS. Une reproduction a petite echelle entrainera une legere augmentation des effectifs acridiens dans le Sahel septentrional de Mauritanie, du Mali, du Niger, du Tchad et du sud de I'Algerie. On ne s'attend a aucun developpement significatif.

From 2014 to 2017, seven countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of WHO benefited from the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework - Partnership Contribution (PC) to enhance their surveillance and laboratory capacities using the High-level Partnership Contribution Implementation Plan I (HLIP I) 2013-2016.
Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 60,309 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 8 August. Arrivals to Spain during the month’s first eight days are at least five times those to either Italy or Greece, until this year both much more popular destinations for irregular migrants than Spain traditionally has been. This year’s totals through the first week of August are compared with 117,988 at this time last year and 263,436 at this time in 2016

RÉGION CENTRALE: CALME
SITUATION. Des ailés isolés étaient présents à l’intérieur du Soudan.
CALM SITUATION. Isolated adults were present in central and eastern Algeria. FORECAST. Small-scale breeding will occur in the northern Sahel of Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and southern Algeria with very low numbers of hoppers appearing. No significant developments are likely.
ALGIERS – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) received a contribution of dates from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia worth US$1.5 million to support refugees residing in camps in Algeria.
For several years, Saudi Arabia has donated dates – which enhance the nutritional value of WFP food assistance – for distribution in refugee camps in Algeria. The most recent contribution of more than 700 metric tons is three times larger than contributions made in previous years, and comes at a critical time when monthly food assistance has been reduced.

Regional Flow Monitoring Network
120 FMPs are currently active in 2 countries in the region. As part of discussions on methodology changes/discussion, the number of FMPS was reduced to 115 from 162, so as to focus on more strategic points.
In Yemen, DTM Flow Monitoring exercise captured 11,774 migrants arriving by boat during May 2018. 84% of migrants are Ethiopians and 16% Somalis. 92% intended to reach Saudi Arabia and 8% intended to stay in Yemen.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has called for a fundamental shift in the way drought is perceived and managed in the Near East and North Africa region. The agency said in a new report issued today that a more pro-active approach based on the principles of risk reduction is needed to build greater resilience to droughts.

WaPOR: database dissemination portal and APIs
The FAO portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WaPOR) monitors and reports on agriculture water productivity over Africa and the Near East.
It provides open access to the water productivity database and its thousands of underlying map layers, it allows for direct data queries, time series analyses, area statistics and data download of key variables associated to water and land productivity assessments.
