UNHCR Desperate Journeys report provides snapshot of changing refugee movements to Europe

Despite a drop in the number of refugees and migrants reaching Europe last year, the dangers many face along the way have in some cases increased, according to a new report by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, setting out changing patterns of movement.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 15,289 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea through the first 95 days of 2018, with about 44 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece (33%) Spain (23%) and Cyprus (less than 1%).

This compares with 31,060 at this point in 2017, and with 172,089 at this point in March in 2016.

IOM Rome’s Flavio Di Giacomo on Thursday shared data released this week in Italy concerning the top 11 countries of origin where arriving migrants are coming from (see chart below).

Highlights in January and February

  • In Niger, increasing insecurity in the Tillabéri region has led to an increase in internal displacement in the region.
    The number of IDPs tripled in the region in February.

  • In January, hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants were deported to the Tamanrasset camp in Algeria and transported to Arlit, then Agadez in Niger. Approximately 3,000 people were deported, mostly Nigerien but also from Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and Guinea.

In February, 3 400 irregular border crossings were detected on the four main migratory routes into the EU, down nearly three-quarters from the year-ago period.

In the first two months of this year, the total number of irregular border crossings almost halved to 12 000, in large part due to lower migratory pressure on the Central Mediterranean route.

Le nombre moyen d’individu identifiés en novembre 2017 était de 238 personnes par jour, représentant une hausse de 11% par rapport au mois précédent. Les ressortissants maliens, guinéens, ivoiriens, sénégalais et gambiens représentaient 78% des migrants identifiés.

Le nombre moyen d’individu identifiés en février 2018 était de 221 personnes par jour, représentant une baisse de 7% par rapport au mois précédent. Les ressortissants maliens, guinéens, ivoiriens, sénégalais et gambiens représentaient 79% des migrants identifiés. 76% des migrants étaient des hommes et 10% d’entre eux étaient des mineurs (soit 2% de moins qu’en décembre).

Between 1 January and 28 February 2018, 5,247 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 61% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (13,439). Monthly sea arrivals in February 2018 stood at 1,058. This was the lowest number of monthly arrivals on Italian shores since late 2013.
