Afghanistan

Ghazni’s Malistan and Jaghori districts home to mainly Hazaras, an ethnic Shi’ite minority, are under siege. Over 5,600 people have left the area since fighting escalated on 7 November. There are grave protection concerns for the remaining population.

Access to the highly contested province is constrained, hampering humanitarian assistance and movement of people trying to flee violence.

Criticism of the government’s response sparked protests in Kabul; a nearby suicide bomb killed at least 6 people.

Project aim

The Grand Bargain struck by more than 30 humanitarian donors and aid agencies at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit set out to reform the aid system so it is better prepared for tackling the emergency needs of people affected by crises worldwide. Since then, Ground Truth Solutions and the OECD, with support from the German Federal Foreign Office, have endeavoured to set a baseline for tracking the impact of the Grand Bargain at the country level through the experience of affected people and aid providers.

Sarajevo – With elevated numbers of migrants and refugees entering Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2017, the European Union has just allocated more than EUR 7.2 million in grants to support the work of the UN Migration Agency, IOM, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The funds were provided through an Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance special measure. Resultant projects will be implemented by IOM in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency and UNICEF to help further strengthen the country's migration management, asylum, border control and surveillance capacities.

Overview

So far in 2018, a total of 27,492 refugees and migrants arrived in Greece by sea. The majority are from Syria (27%), Afghanistan (25%) and Iraq (19%). More than half of the population are women (24%) and children (37%), while 40% are men.

Arrivals in October 2018, at 4,073 increased in comparison to September, when 3,960 people arrived on the islands.

Executive summary

This report is the latest release by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) on the economic impact of violence and conflict to the global economy. It provides an empirical basis for understanding the economic benefits resulting from improvements in peace. Estimates of the economic impact of violence are provided for 163 countries and independent territories, covering over 99.5 per cent of the global population.

Overview

The majority of those returned to Turkey are Pakistani nationals (38 percent of total). Syrians constitute 19 percent of the total number of those returned, and are followed by Algerians, Afghans and Bangladeshis.

In total, 337 Syrians have been returned to Turkey to date. 36 of them have been returned on the basis that their asylum claims were found inadmissible at 2nd instance.

By the end of October 2018, UNHCR had created 25,898 places in the accommodation scheme as part of the ESTIA programme. These were in 4,306 apartments and 23 buildings, in 14 cities and 7 islands across Greece.
