“Colombia is facing an unprecedented crisis as thousands of people from Venezuela continue to cross the border daily due to lack of food, medicine and other basic needs. Colombians and their Government are doing all they can to step up to this challenge. The country has made progress in its peace process and ending hunger; however, as the migration crisis grows in proportion, recent gains are being jeopardized.

Background

Since early 2015, Venezuelans have been leaving their country of origin due to social, economic and political turmoil. As of July 2018 it was estimated that over 54,000 Venezuelans are in Brazil, with the large majority entering the country through Pacaraima. Pacaraima is a small border town with an estimated population of 15,000 people, located in the north of Roraima state, 215 km from the state capital Boa Vista. Between June and August 2018, 7,989 people were recorded to have crossed the border from Venezuela through Pacaraima.

Migration flow through Colombia has been steadily increasing over the past few years. At the moment, there are more than 1.1 million people in need in the country, including both migrants and Colombian communities returning to the country. The Colombia-Venezuela border has been experiencing a constant mixed migratory flow of people since 2017, who use Colombia as a transit zone, temporary shelter or a supply point. According to UNHCR figures, most migrants are concentrated in the departments of Norte de Santander and La Guajira.
