More than 2 million people have fled the once-prosperous Venezuela due to a political and economic crisis that has resulted in record inflation rates and severe food and medicine shortages.

Most have traveled to neighboring countries in Latin America. About 250,000 Venezuelans are staying in Ecuador, seeking the food and medical attention that they can no longer get in Venezuela.

Many Venezuelans who arrive in Ecuador come hungry and dehydrated, carrying only the clothes on their backs. Often, they have spent everything on transportation across Colombia.

“Colombia is facing an unprecedented crisis as thousands of people from Venezuela continue to cross the border daily due to lack of food, medicine and other basic needs. Colombians and their Government are doing all they can to step up to this challenge. The country has made progress in its peace process and ending hunger; however, as the migration crisis grows in proportion, recent gains are being jeopardized.

The number of Venezuelans seeking asylum has risen yearly since 2014. Between 2014 and 2018, some 170,169 asylum claims have been lodged, over 94,000 in 2017 alone and 4,225 recognized as refugees

The majority of Venezuelans who have left their country have no regular status, and are therefore more vulnerable to any form of exploitation, abuse, violence, trafficking and discrimination.

Thousands continue to legally enter daily in neighbouring countries. It is expected that people will continue to leave in 2018. UNHCR is stepping up its response accordingly.
