The month of October saw the highest number of Start Fund awarded responses in one single month. From awarding responses to cross-border displacement in Ecuador and Peru to anticipating a volcanic eruption in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) it was the highest alerting and activated month in the history of the Start Fund, where 13 alerts from 15 were activated. In comparison, the previous highest alerting month which was August 2016 had 11 alerts, of which 7 were activated.

BBC news reports that tens of thousands of Venezuelans are fleeing their country because of chronic shortages of food and medicines. Since 2014, millions of citizens have left Venezuela given the country’s longstanding economic crisis.

Background

Since early 2015, Venezuelans have been leaving their country of origin due to social, economic and political turmoil. As of July 2018 it was estimated that over 54,000 Venezuelans are in Brazil, with the large majority entering the country through Pacaraima. Pacaraima is a small border town with an estimated population of 15,000 people, located in the north of Roraima state, 215 km from the state capital Boa Vista. Between June and August 2018, 7,989 people were recorded to have crossed the border from Venezuela through Pacaraima.
