The Americas is a culturally diverse, geographically large and economically complex region, which accounts for around 26.3 per cent of the world’s migrants (68 million people). Poverty, family reunification, inequality and violence are common factors that motivate people to migrate in the Americas.

This revised Emergency Appeal seeks a total of some 4.89 million Swiss francs to enable the IFRC to support the Colombian Red Cross Society (CRCS) to deliver assistance and support to 120,000 people. This 16-month operation focuses on supporting migrants in the areas of health, water and sanitation, shelter, protection, livelihood and migration. This revised Emergency Appeal includes a scale up of the health intervention to address the basic health needs of migrants in ten departments in Colombia.

In the second quarter of 2018, the ICRC's activities in Venezuela and the CARICOM States focused on training health care professionals in treating emergency room trauma patients in hospitals. Additionally, hundreds of members of the Armed and Security Forces learnt about how to reinforce the integration and observance of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international standards on the use of force. Venezuelan Red Cross rescue workers continue with the preparation for emergency situations and first aid.

Panama/Geneva, 10 September 2018 – The largest movement of people across the Americas in recent years is causing growing humanitarian needs across the region, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said today.

According to the United Nations, around 2.3 million people are believed to be on the move. The situation is especially increasing in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay, Peru, Argentina, Chile, and several countries in the Caribbean.

In the past month, the numbers of people on the move has dramatically increased with an upsurge of adults and children walking from destination to destination. The Colombian Red Cross Society (CRCS) has faced challenges due to the changing nature of this population flow, which has led to modifying fixed aid units in the border areas to the establishment of mobile aid points along the roads where this population transits.

Panama/Geneva, 31 August 2018 – Help, respect and compassion are needed in response to the massive and continuous movement of people across Venezuela and several other countries in the Americas, the President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said today.

It is estimated that between 1.6 million and 4 million people are currently on the move in search of relief from instability or insecurity in their home countries.

In the first quarter of 2018, our teams brought together more than 100 health care professionals for an emergency room trauma course aimed at increasing the chances of survival for patients at risk in hospitals. Medical supplies were also provided, some of which were used for treating wounds in public and military hospitals, for example.

Over 500 patients were assisted in the first quarter of 2018, including victims of urban violence and emergency cases.

Migration flow through Colombia has been steadily increasing over the past few years. At the moment, there are more than 1.1 million people in need in the country, including both migrants and Colombian communities returning to the country. The Colombia-Venezuela border has been experiencing a constant mixed migratory flow of people since 2017, who use Colombia as a transit zone, temporary shelter or a supply point. According to UNHCR figures, most migrants are concentrated in the departments of Norte de Santander and La Guajira.

The ICRC in Venezuela and the CARICOM States promote and maintain constructive humanitarian dialogue with a range of authorities; they work with Security and Armed Forces to reinforce the integration of and respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the international rules on the use of force; they run emergency room trauma courses for military and public health professionals, and are strengthening their association with the Venezuelan Red Cross (VRC) by training up VRC volunteers and providing them with technical, financial and logistical support.
