February 17, 2005, Baltimore, MD - Thousands of people are stranded and in need of shelter after heavy rains provoked violent landslides and massive flooding in the low-lying coastal areas of Venezuela, Guyana and Colombia. Nearly 110,000 people are displaced from their homes, part of an estimated 250,000 who have been directly affected by the flooding in these three countries. There are 50 known dead as rescue workers search for the missing and try to reach stranded communities.

Baltimore, December 29, 1999 - Catholic Relief Services has begun work with Caritas Venezuela on the response to the recent flooding emergency in that country. Flooding in the northern region of Venezuela earlier this month killed up to 30,000 people and left approximately 150,000 homeless. Relief efforts being coordinated through Caritas Venezuela are centered on the eight dioceses that suffered the greatest damage.

Catholic Relief Services has committed financial resources and staff in response to Venezuela's worst natural disaster of the century - a disaster striking in the height of the Christmas season. Due to recent flooding, at least 5,000 people are confirmed dead. The Government of Venezuela estimates that up to 20,000 people may be dead. Approximately 130,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and 94,000 are completely homeless.
