Diphtheria in the Americas - Summary of the situation

Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 37 of 2018, three countries in the Region of the Americas (Colombia, Haiti, and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela) have reported confirmed cases of diphtheria. While in Colombia no new cases have been detected (since July 2018), in Haiti and Venezuela the outbreaks are ongoing.

The following is a summary of the epidemiological situation in these countries.

Situation Summary

In 2018, as of 21 September, a total of 6,629 confirmed cases of measles, including 72 deaths, have been reported in 11 countries of the Region of the Americas: Antigua and Barbuda (1 case), Argentina (11 cases), Brazil (1,735 cases, including 10 deaths), Canada (22 cases), Colombia (85 cases), Ecuador (19 cases), Guatemala (1 case), Mexico (5 cases), Peru (21 cases), the United States of America (124 cases), and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (4,605 cases, including 62 deaths).

Washington, D.C., 24 de agosto de 2018 (OPS/OMS)- Si bien 34 de los Estados Miembros de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) siguen libres de sarampión, la transmisión endémica del virus se ha reestablecido en Venezuela. Para frenar una mayor propagación del sarampión en la región, la Directora de la OPS, Carissa F. Etienne, instó a los países a aumentar rápidamente la cobertura de vacunación.

On 7 August 2018, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NOAA) reported Hurricane John is located 320 miles south west of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico and 345 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, with strong wind gusts; it is expected to become a major hurricane tonight or early tomorrow. Measles in the Americas: New epidemiological update

Washington, DC, 24 July 2018 (PAHO)- According to the latest epidemiological update from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), emitted on 20 July 2018, a total of 2472 confirmed cases of measles have been reported from 11 countries in the Americas so far this year.

The majority of the cases occurred in Venezuela (1613 cases) and Brazil (677), followed by the United States (91), Colombia (40), Canada (19), Ecuador (17), Argentina (5), Mexico (5), Peru (3), Antigua and Barbuda (1) and Guatemala (1).

Washington, DC, June 15, 2018 (PAHO/WHO) -Tests carried out by the specialized global laboratory for genetic sequencing have ruled out the presence of both wild poliovirus and vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV). The latter- VDPV- is a Sabin virus with genetic mutations that give it the ability to produce the disease. There is no risk of spread to the community or outbreaks of polio from this case.
