This 12-month report reflects progress against the objectives as well as a revised budget to reflect changes within budgetary lines. The Haiti Red Cross Society began responding to the Zika outbreak in April 2017 through support made available from USAID within this Emergency Appeal. Their work is coordinated from the IFRC Caribbean Cluster office and a revised budget supports their inclusion in this Operation. In addition, the appeal has been extended for an additional 4 months (ending on 31 December 2017).

Del 24 al 30 de enero de 2017 la Federación Internacional de las Sociedades de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna Roja (FICR), a través de la Operación Zika, el Centro de Referencia en Preparación Institucional para Desastres (CREPD) y la Cruz Roja Venezolana desarrollaron un taller de formación de formadores sobre temas en salud relacionados al virus del Zika. El taller se llevó a cabo en Valencia, Venezuela, y 22 participantes de 10 filiales nacionales de la Cruz Roja Venezolana recibieron su certificación.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, through its Zika Operation and with technical support from the Reference Center for Institutional Disaster Preparedness (CREPD) and the Red Cross Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Reference Centre (CADRIM), held a 3-day regional meeting to revise the capacity building strategy that supports the response to the Zika outbreak.

This revised Emergency Appeal seeks a total of some 7.51 million Swiss francs (decreased from 9.27 million Swiss francs) to enable the IFRC to support National Societies world-wide to respond to the global Zika virus outbreak, delivering assistance to 7 million people for 19 months, with a focus on 10 priority intervention areas, including health emergency risk management, preparedness, vector control, community based surveillance, community engagement and psychosocial support.

Less than a month ago, on November 18th, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the Zika virus is no longer a public health emergency of international concern. It does, however, continue to present a serious public health concern in the Americas, especially to the most vulnerable populations like women of childbearing age. To date, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has registered over 515,000 suspected Zika cases, of which more than 170,000 have been confirmed.

Summary: Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne virus predominately transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquitoes (A.aegypti and A.albopictus) - the same type of mosquitoes that spreads dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. The Zika virus is spreading rapidly and increasing scientific evidence is demonstrating the impact of the virus, especially on pregnant women and their infants is far greater than first reported.

This Global Emergency Appeal seeks a total of 9.27 million Swiss francs to enable the IFRC to support National Societies world-wide to scale-up the response to the Zika virus disease, delivering assistance to one million people for 12 months, with a focus on 10 priority intervention areas, including health emergency risk management, preparedness, vector control, community based surveillance, community engagement and psychosocial support. This Appeal is supported and complemented by country and regional-based Plans of Action.

This Emergency Appeal seeks a total of 2,380,409 Swiss francs (CHF) to enable the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the National Societies in the Americas region to deliver assistance and support to 200,000 people through direct intervention and 1 million people through indirect community engagement, with a focus on health, water, sanitation, hygiene promotion and preparedness. This regional Emergency Appeal is launched on a preliminary basis pending further assessment and revision in the coming weeks.
