Maria, the 13th named storm of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane near the Leeward Islands on Monday September 18 th, 2017. Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18 th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Maria then impacted Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis on September 19th, 2017 and the Virgin Islands September 19 – 20, 2017.

Dominica

At least 14 people have died in Dominica, with the number of fatalities expected to rise as large areas of the island remain inaccessible after category 5 Hurricane Maria decimated the island’s east coast, according to initial reports from the ground.

A team comprising officials from Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), United Nations Disaster Assessment Coordination (UNDAC), the British Armed Forces and the Department for International Development (DFID) arrived in Dominica by a helicopter on 20 September.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela continues to stand in solidarity with Dominica.

The country’s President, His Excellency Nicolas Maduro Moros visited the island on Wednesday September 23rd in support of Dominica’s efforts to alleviate the plight of those who lost during the storm.

The country donated 300 Petro Casas to the Government and people of Dominica.

Displaced residents of the communities of Petite Savanne and Dubique are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

The Government of Dominica continues to seek assistance from every part of the globe.

This is all in an effort to bring relief to those who have been affected by the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.

The communities identified as “special disaster areas” as well as other critical areas have already begun receiving supplies including food, water, and medicine.

At a press conference on Monday August 31st, Prime Minister Skerrit conveyed that he has written to every country seeking assistance.

Venezuela envió hoy el primer cargamento de ayuda humanitaria a Dominica, tras el paso por el Caribe de la tormenta tropical Erika que dejó al menos 27 muertos y cuantiosos daños materiales en esa nación insular.

El viceministro de Gestión de Riesgo y Protección Civil, Ángel Martínez, manifestó que en virtud del paso del fenómeno natural, el presidente Nicolás Maduro impulsó este plan con el fin de garantizar el abastecimiento de la población.
