This Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) targets 2.6 million people, which only represents a limited number of all people in need, and includes 1.2 million girls and boys for the remainder for 2019. The financial requirement to achieve this goal is US$223 million. The HRP builds on the United Nations scale-up strategy, which was initiated in October 2018 to respond to the most pressing humanitarian needs, and the efforts of other humanitarian partners.

Asylum applications in the EU+ up by 10 % in the first half of 2019 from the same period in 2018

Applications from Latin America reached a new peak.

Preliminary analyses reveal that in the first half of 2019 some 337 200 applications for asylum were lodged in the EU+, a 10 % increase from the same period a year earlier. In contrast to this upward trend, in June 2019 applications fell to the lowest level of the year, but there were fewer working days.

Situation summary

In the Region of the Americas, between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 301 of 2019, a total of 2,029,342 cases of dengue (207.9 cases per 100,000 population) have been reported, including 723 deaths. Of the total cases, 846,342 (42%) were laboratory-confirmed and 12,268 (0.6%) were classified as severe dengue. The reported case-fatality rate was 0.04%.

A new law decree came into force in mid-June, which could limit the disembarkation of refugees and migrants rescued at sea. UNHCR asked Parliament to amend it and prioritize rescue operations.

In June, 1,218 refugees and migrants reached Italian shores, the highest number of monthly sea arrivals in 2019 so far. Most sea arrivals in June departed from Tunisia.

Increasing numbers of land arrivals, including unaccompanied children, were reported travelling from Slovenia into the northern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
