The situation

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in the first 30 epidemiological weeks of 2019 in the Americas Region, there were 2,052,914 dengue cases (12,268 classified as severe), including 740 deaths. The number of cases reported is higher than the annual totals reported in the last two years (2017 and 2018). In 2018, there were 560,586 reported cases of dengue and 336 deaths.

Those left behind – especially people living in the interior of the country – have seen the near shutdown of many public services, including sexual and reproductive health care and services addressing gender-based violence.

• During the month of May, a daily average of 2,500 to 3,000 entries of Venezuelan refugees and migrants was registered at the official border crossing points.

• Humanitarian personnel was trained on Protection of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse with a total of 321 people trained in May.

This revised Emergency Appeal has an increased timeframe, number of people to be reached and budget. The number of services to be provided is increased from 120,000 to 170,000. The budget has been increased to 6,591,863 Swiss francs from 4.89 million Swiss francs. The budget is distributed in the same manner as in the original Emergency Appeal with additional funding to permit new activities that respond to the current analysis of humanitarian needs in the country, as well as support for the continuation of work by the operational team.

The situation

In early 2015, the Americas region began to experience a surge in migration flows due in large part to the rise of people emigrating from Venezuela in response to the country’s faltering economy. This swell in migration continued in the years following, as the number of Venezuelans living in Latin American countries rose from an estimated 700,000 in 2015 to over 3 million by late 2018. As of June 2019, an estimated 4.3 million Venezuelan’s have left the country since 2015.
