As of 25 May 2018, Sub tropical storm Alberto, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/hour, has passed over Cuba and brought torrential rainfalls (4 inches of water in 24 hours) causing overflowing of rivers and streams. According to Ministry of Interior, Flood waters swept away a bridge and damaged roads and other infrastructure, leaving many communities cut off and nearly 60,000 people without electricity. More than 51,000 Cubans have been evacuated in the affected area. 11 people reported dead, historical figure in Cuba, and 2 disappeared respectively across the affected territories.

Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region are highly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, forest fires, floods, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions. Between FY 2008 and FY 2017, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/ OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/ FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a diverse range of emergencies in the region.

ECUADOR

The Citizen Solidarity and Joint Responsibility Law has raised about US$500 million, as of June, as response to the 16 April earthquake. Authorities have already used $140 million of this amount - $70 million for the province of Esmeraldas. Reconstruction efforts continue in the north coastal areas of Ecuador.

ECUADOR: La Ley Solidaria y de Corresponsabilidad Ciudadana por las afectaciones del terremoto de 16 de abril ha recaudado hasta el momento cerca de US$500 millones.

PERÚ: Cerca de 300 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria se enviaron la semana pasada a la provincia de Caylloma, en la región de Arequipa, para asistir a los cerca de 6,000 damnificados por el terremoto que también dejó 4 personas muertas.

Este seminario se realizará del 4 al 8 de Junio, en la Escuela de Capacitación “Carlos Lleras Restrepo” de la Defensa Civil Colombiana, con la participación de expertos de Francia, Perú, Ecuador y Venezuela.

Qué es UNDAC?
La Evaluacion y Coordinacion ante Desastres de las Naciones Unidas (UNDAC, para su siglas en ingles) es parte del sistema internacional de respuesta a emergencias repentinas.
UNDAC fue creado en 1993. Es diseñado para apoyar a las Naciones Unidas y los gobiernos de paises afectados por desastres durante la primer fase de una emergencia repentina. Ademas, UNDAC apoya en la coordinación de la llegada de socorro internacional al nivel nacional y/o al sitio de la emergencia.

What is UNDAC?
The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) is part of the international emergency response system for sudden-onset emergencies.
UNDAC was created in 1993. It is designed to help the United Nations and governments of disaster-affected countries during the first phase of a sudden-onset emergency. UNDAC also assists in the coordination of incoming international relief at national level and/or at the site of the emergency.
